Survey on Joint Care of Hong Kong's Working PopulationBack

Date of Release:February 22, 2005

Nearly 80% of Hong Kong Working Class At Risk Of Arthritis
Over Half Suffer From Joint Problems Around The Year

(Hong Kong February 22, 2005) Joint problem is a serious health issue in Hong Kong according to the latest results of a survey sponsored by Seven Seas High Strength. The "Joint Health of Working Class in Hong Kong Survey" conducted by the Public Opinion Programme of the University of Hong Kong revealed that nearly 80% of the working class interviewed are at risk of arthritis and 52% of these respondents suffer from joint problems around the year. The "Joint Health of Working Class in Hong Kong Survey" surveyed 506 working individuals aged 35-50 by telephone in November 2004. The survey was conducted to better understand the joint problems existing among working class.

Dr. Robert Ting-Yiu Chung, Director of the Public Opinion Programme of the University of Hong Kong, revealed that a staggering 72% of respondents have suffered joint pain in the past 12 months, 37% have experienced paralysis and pain, and almost one quarter (23%) experienced weakness and a lack of energy due to joint pain. Only 21% of fortunate respondents have not encountered any symptoms of joint problems*.

Among the nearly 80% of respondents who have suffered from joint problems (the sub-sample size was 400 people), 40% of them expressed that knees were vulnerable to joint problems such as pain, stiffness, paralysis, redness, swelling and limited movement in joints, followed by shoulders, hips, elbow and necks.

The survey showed that joint health of Hong Kong working class has been deteriorating. 46% of this group of respondents admitted that the pain was caused by work. Only 6% related the cause of joint problems to wear-and-tear of cartilage. 42% of these respondents would apply medicinal liquor and ointment to alleviate their joint pain, which is the most popular method adopted.

Dr. Henry Ho, Orthopaedic Specialist at Healthgate Medical Group commented, "Considering joint pain is a major symptom of arthritis, it appears that Hong Kong working class is facing a high risk of arthritis. This is a main concern and people should take joint pain and any symptoms of arthritis seriously and engage in appropriate treatments if symptoms occur. Applying medicinal liquor and ointment is only a superficial treatment. It's worth taking preventive measures to protect our joints against arthritis which is mainly caused by cartilage degeneration. If not, patients who are suffering from serious arthritis may have to pay up to HK$100,000 to undergo knee joint replacement surgery. "

A groundbreaking clinical study led by Professor Bruce Caterson and Professor John Harwood of Cardiff University, and Professor Colin Dent, Orthopaedic Consultant, University of Wales College of Medicine revealed that extra high-strength cod liver oil - Triomega is effective in slowing the degeneration of joint cartilage in patients with arthritis. For the first time ever, the clinical study provides unique human evidence of the effectiveness of extra high-strength cod liver oil - Triomega in the management of osteoarthritis.

The trial shows that 86% of pre-operative patients with arthritis, who took Triomega - extra high strength cod liver oil capsules daily, had absent or significantly reduced levels of enzymes that cause cartilage degeneration compared to 26% of those given a placebo oil capsule. In addition, the result showed a marked reduction in some of the enzymes that cause joint pain, in those patients taking Triomega - the extra high strength cod liver oil. The result further verifies the effectiveness of Triomega on joint health.

Joints are integral to human movement. Arthritis may be caused by cartilage degeneration because of age, work and repeated damages. Arthritis is a chronic disease that causes pain, swelling and limited movement in joints and connective tissues throughout the body.

* Symptoms of joint pain, paralysis, limb weakness, limited movement, stiffness, inflammation and swelling.
