 U.S. News & World Report: "America's Best Colleges"
Background︰U.S. News & World Report began its "America's Best Colleges" rankings as early as in 1983. Since there have been criticisms on the calculation of university ranking by this magazine regarding the unfairness towards the students from families of lower income, the rankings have incorporated the students' subsidy into the calculation since 2007. Other indicators include opinions from staff, resources of institutions, financial resources, donations from alumni, performance of graduates, etc.
 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities
Background: The website includes a self-compiled ranking of world's best 3000 universities. It states that such ranking mainly focuses on the performance of providing knowledge by each university online, and the volume of each electronic literature published may not represent the quality of education and reputation of each university. Since 2004, it has started to compile ranking of world universities, including universities of Hong Kong.
 Academic Ranking of World Universities, compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Background: The Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has started to compile Academic Ranking of World Universities since 2003. Ranking criteria include quality of education, quality of faculty, research output and size of institution, etc. The result list includes universities of Hong Kong, as well as Shanghai Jiao Tong University itself.
 THE – QS World University Rankings
Background: Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds(QS)have jointly started to compile this annual rankings of top 600 universities since 2004. Ranking criteria include rating among academics and employers, ratio between academics and students, use of research output, etc. In 2016, the responsible organization published its Asian University Rankings for the ninth time. Two institutions of Hong Kong occupied the top 5 places.
